Class 4 Blackberry Jam

Home-made blackberry jam.

This week we made the most of the one sunny day we had in Port Talbot and went blackberry picking. We are trying to see if we can make jam for less than it would cost to buy it in the supermarket. We picked our own blackberries, which were free, recycled jam jars which were also free, so the only thing we had to buy was jam sugar. This cost £2.80. From this we made 8 jars of blackberry jam. So each jar cost us 35p. What a bargain!

Here is the recipe we used:

Ingredients

800g of blackberries

1kg of jam sugar

2 teaspoons of butter

Method

1. Mix the berries and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently until the sugar has melted. Keep stirring.

2. Once it starts to boil, add the butter and turn the heat up for 4 minutes.

3. Carefully pour into the clean jars.

4. Leave to cool.
