An Adventure at Neath Abbey Ruins
A wonderful visit for our pupils to the Neath Abbey ruins.
It was a fantastic day filled with exploration and learning about the rich history of the site, and we would like to share some highlights with you.
First and foremost, we would like to commend our pupils for their excellent behaviour throughout the day. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were a joy to witness, and they represented our school admirably. A special thank you goes to Harriet Eaton, the Heritage Education Officer, who provided us with an engaging guided tour. Her knowledge and passion for the history of Neath Abbey truly enhanced the experience for the children.
During our visit, pupils had the opportunity to explore various features of the ruins, using both a site plan and photographs to guide their observations. Amongst the fascinating elements they learned about were the church, the quarters of the lay brothers and monks, dining halls, book room and even the remnants of a Tudor mansion. The insights gained from this historical environment are invaluable, supporting our curriculum and allowing our students to connect with history in a tangible way. The monks' latrine was a particular highlight!
We were fortunate to have clear skies and no rain, which made our exploration even more enjoyable. This trip not only reinforced our learning about local history and the Tudor era, but it also encouraged teamwork and collaboration amongst the pupils as they worked together to find and discuss the features of the site.
As a recommendation for future outings, we encourage you to discuss the experience with your children. Asking them about their favourite aspects of the visit or what surprised them the most can help reinforce their learning and spark further interest in history.
